Rockdale Community Nursery is a joint venture between Rockdale City Council and the Intellectual Disability Foundation of St. George. The venture was developed to enhance the lives of people with intellectual disabilities by offering both a vocation and a meaningful wage.
The nursery mainly operates on a wholesale basis, supplying plants to Councils, landscapers and builders. It offers contract growing, seed collection and propagation, delivery and technical advice.
The nursery is open to the general public. Approximately 80,000 plants are available for sale, ranging from tube stocks to advanced trees, and including a wide variety of species, such as Murraya, Buxus, Camellia, Gardenia, Grevillea and many more. Should the nursery not have a plant you require, they are able to source it for you.
Recent achievements
On the 29th May 2002, the Rockdale Community Nursery and the Parks & Properties Service Unit were presented with their Quality Assurance Accreditation (ISO.9001:2000) for maintaining an excellent standard of service to the community. The Executive General Manager of Quality Assurance Services, who is an external accreditation body and subsidiary of Standards Australia, presented this certification.
In 2000, the nursery was commissioned to grow nearly 700 trees, mainly hybrid swamp mahoganys and forest redgums, from seeds and cuttings for Interciti's North Arncliffe development site. Prior to being awarded this major contract, Rockdale Community Nursery provided plants to beautify the area for the Olympics.
Rockdale Community Nursery won a High Recommendation in the 2000 Innovation Awards for Community Partnership, presented by South Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (SSROC).
