Rockdale City Council and the Sydney
Harbour Foreshore Authority are planning for the future by redeveloping
the Cooks Cove area. Cooks Cove is located in Arncliffe, 10 kilometres
south of the Sydney CBD. It is close to Sydney Airport and Port Botany,
and is bordered by the Cooks River to the east.
The State Government gazetted the Sydney
Regional Environmental Plan (SREP 33) in 2004, a copy of the SREP can
be viewed below. The site encompasses the Kogarah Golf Course and
Barton Park, along the foreshores of the Cooks River. It includes a
proposed gateway commerce and advanced technology centre, comprising 20
percent of the 100ha site. The trade and technology use has the
potential to generate employment for 16,000 people with 5000
construction jobs and 11,000 operational jobs on completion. Passive
and recreational open space is planned for the remaining land area
providing a diverse range of recreational activities, including the
relocation and improvement of Kogarah Golf Course to international
standard, improved access to the foreshore, and pedestrian and public
transport access to Sydney Airport.
The Cooks River frontage will be opened
up for public use with pedestrian and cycle pathways along the river
with links to the Homebush/Botany Bay cycleway. The redevelopment will
also allow for the preservation and continued cultivation of the
heritage market gardens as well as the environmental protection of the
adjoining wetlands.
The wetlands
will be maintained and enhanced and be publicly accessible. Council has
also developed a relocation and public awareness strategy to
accommodate the sporting clubs that need to be relocated off the Cooks
Cove site. These sporting clubs will have new facilities in new
locations.
