The City's town centres are set to be revitalised as new Masterplans for Bexley North, Banksia, Arncliffe, Ramsgate Beach and King Street Place in Rockdale were adopted by Council.
Part of Council's 'Thriving Town Centre' initiative, the plans show the heart of each suburb redesigned to improve access for pedestrians, encourage shopping, provide a meeting place for the community, as well as making the areas safer by day and night.
King Street Place – from King Lane to Market Street – will be a traffic-free zone. Large deciduous trees, new lighting and seats, and flower displays will be installed, opening up space for al fresco Dining, outdoor markets and entertainment.
Arncliffe will see the planting of large trees, pedestrian-friendly pavements, better lighting and traffic calming devices.
The area around the railway station will be upgraded at Banksia with improved paving and lighting.
At Bexley North, footpaths will be widened along Illawarra Road, green spaces will be created and lighting improved.
For Ramsgate Beach the creation of a wide pedestrian boardwalk will connect the shops to Cooks Park and the famous Norfolk pines will be enhanced. Vehicle and pedestrian access will be improved and custom-made lighting and furniture will be installed.
