The traditional owners of what became the City of Rockdale include the Cadigal, the Gwegal and the Bidjigal tribes. Known as 'Water People', these tribes inhabited the area for thousands of years before white settlers arrived.

Development of the area dates from the early 1800s, and was first known by Europeans as Frog Hollow, then White Gum Flat and West Botany. Finally the name Rockdale was suggested by pioneer and tollgate keeper, Mary Ann Geeves because of the rocky landscape surrounding the area, and was officially adopted in 1887.

Residential development began with the opening of the railway in 1884 and until 1949, an electric tramway operated between Rockdale station and Brighton Le Sands. Significant development occurred in the 1930s, especially around the railway station. Growth continued in the post-war years and in more recent year’s growth has occurred largely due to an increase in high density housing.

Allan Wight of Guardian FuneralsAfter a successful career in the finance industry, former IT consultant and trouble shooter Allan Wight's move into the funeral industry was not entirely by accident. It was his roles in aged care at Home Care Services of NSW and chaplaincy work at the Sir Thomas Mitchell Nursing Home that encouraged him into
his present role as funeral director.

Allan is based in Rockdale with a company that has been part of Rockdale's funeral industry since 1948. The company owns and operates funeral homes, cemeteries and crematoria around Australia and New Zealand.

Both his parents were ministers with The Salvation Army at Bexley for 40 years, and Alan is actively involved with the Salvo’s Red Shield Appeal.

Allen contributes to the Rockdale business community through his involvement with the Rockdale City Chamber of Commerce and Toastmasters.
