Wild Things: Keeping Native Bee Hives with Peter Clarke

A nest or box of Australian stingless bees makes a wonderful addition to your backyard - whether you are a gardener, a small-crop grower or simply a lover of Australian wildlife.

They will help to pollinate your treasured plants. They will supply you with a taste of their unique honey. They have interesting social behaviour like the honey bees, but they are stingless and easier to handle. Best of all, they are "true blue" Australian bees.

Come and join local native bee expert Peter Clarke at this workshop, learn all about the stingless Australian native bees and go in the draw to win a hive of native bees and other prizes!

Wild Things has been assisted by the New South Wales Government through its Environmental Trust.

Wild Things: Native Plant Seed Propagation and Potting Up Workshop

Council volunteers have been collecting and propagating seed from local bushland over the last couple of months and now it is time to pot up some of the seedlings and sow some more seed.

If you're interested in learning how to propagate plants from seed, that will be used to restore and maintain our local environment, please come along to this relaxed, hands on workshop.

Once they have grown the plants will be given away to residents to create native habitat in backyards, including your own! No experience is necessary, just a hat!.

Did you know that there are potentially more types of lizard in your backyard than are found in the whole of the United Kingdom?

Come along and hear Sandra from Sydney Wildlife talk about the amazing range of critters that may be living in your backyard and how to create habitat for them with particular reference to creating homes for lizards. Besides just being all round great animals, lizards are fantastic because they keep down some of our more unloved backyard dwellers, such as snails and cockroaches.

Sandra will have a few backyard 'friends' for you to meet and there will be the chance to win some lizardy prizes.

Wild Things: Meet the Bats!

Have you ever heard of microbats? Did you know that they are living right here in Rockdale? They could even be living in your backyard! Join bat experts Sandra and Narawan for a talk about our amazing Australian bats and meet a real Grey Headed Flying Fox. Following the talk we will take a walk through the Hawthorne Street Natural Area, with a bat detector to 'hear' and if you are quick enough, see the microbats.

To help support our local micro bats and create much needed habitat, you will also have the opportunity to take home your very own microbat nest box to install in your backyard!

To maximise the possibility of seeing and hearing bats, this event will be held at dusk. Please bring a head torch or hand torch and wear mosquito repellent, suitable footwear and clothing. Tea, coffee and biscuits provided.
