Dogs in off leash exercise area
A dog that is in a public place must be under the effective control of some competent person by means of an adequate chain, cord or leash. This law does not apply to owners of assistance/guide dogs if compliance is impractical for those with a disability. It must also be wearing a neck collar with a tag attached showing its name, the address or telephone number of its owner. A $220 penalty applies for a dog not under effective control. For restricted breed and dangerous dogs not under effective control a $1760 penalty applies.
Rockdale City Council provides bins in most parks where dog faeces can be properly disposed of. Council also recommends that you take a suitable bag or scoop along when you and your dog leave home.
The Companion Animals Act requires the owner, or person in charge of the animal to immediately remove dog faeces and properly dispose of it in a provided rubbish receptacle. A $275 penalty applies for a person that fails to remove the dog faeces.
Council has set aside some off leash exercise areas throughout the City where your dog may run free, but again must be under your control.
