Kogarah Kogarah is from an Aboriginal word meaning 'a place of rushes'. Often spelt "Koggerah" in early documents, the name was not officially applied to the district until after the opening of the Illawarra Railway Line in 1884. Kyeemagh Kyeemagh takes its name from the former Kyeema Polo Ground, which was derived from an Aboriginal word meaning 'beautiful dawn'. The 'gh' was added at a later date, before the area was subdivided as the North Brighton Suburbs Estate. Turrella Turrella is an Aboriginal word meaning 'reeds growing in water'. The name was not officially applied to the district until after the opening of the East Hills Railway Line in 1931.
