What We Can Do - Water Conservation

Household Water Conservation

Currently Sydney residents use 350 litres of water per person per day. Residents use the greatest amount of water (69%) in comparison to industrial at 12 per cent and commercial use at 10 per cent.

Within the home, the shower uses the greatest amount of water, closely followed by lawn and garden watering. There are many actions that can be undertaken in the home, to reduce your water use and also reduce the cost of your water bills.

  • Take shorter showers
  • Don't keep the tap running while cleaning your teeth.
  • Install a dual flush toilet
  • Use AAA rated low flow taps or tap aerators which are much more efficient.
  • Wait until the dishwasher or washing machine is full until you put the machine on.
  • Wash fruit and veggies in a half filled sink instead of under running water.
  • Prevent taps from leaking by turning taps off lightly and replace washers as soon as they begin to leak.
  • If you need a garden watering system, install a drip irrigation system to reduce water wastage.
  • When building new gardens, group plants with similar water requirements.
  • Try not to cut lawns too short, as shorter lawns require more water than longer lawns.
  • Use deep mulch and add compost to your soil This helps retain moisture and reduce evaporation.
  • Water your garden in the cool of the morning to avoid evaporation.
  • Paths, patios, driveways and other hard surfaces must never be hosed. Use a broom or rake instead.

Most importantly, keep up to date with the water restrictions set by Sydney Water to ensure you don't get fined!!
