New Waste Collection Service

A short movie commissioned by Council to communicate the details and benefits of the new Garbage & Organics Recovery Bin and the new waste system was sent out to residents.

This movie was part of Council’s New Waste System which was established from February 2008 whereby our resource recovery (ie collected waste that we can reuse or recycle), will increase over the next 10 years from 25 per cent to 80 per cent*.

This means new and improved methods of waste collection, recycling and processing. And as a result of this, the new red-lidded Garbage & Organics Recovery Bin for food scraps and green waste was introduced to complement the existing yellow-lidded Recycling Bin for paper, glass, plastics, aluminium and steel (no plastic bags).

Environmental Benefits

Recycling using your yellow-lidded bin helps the environment by reducing emissions of greenhouse gases, reducing energy use and by saving water. The greenhouse gas benefit from Rockdale’s annual recycling is equivalent to removing 1200 cars from the road.

By processing the materials in the red-lidded Garbage & Organics Recovery Bin using new technology, Rockdale will further reduce Australia’s greenhouse gas footprint by 11,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (compared to landfilling) which would have the same effect as removing another 2600 cars from the road.

*Recycling benefits calculated using Department of Environment and Climate Change’s Environmental Benefits of Recycling Calculator, July 2006
