Recycling Process

The Recycling Process

Council often receives enquires on what happens to recyclable materials after collection.

Your recyclable material is taken to a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) where the individual components are separated as shown in the illustration below.

Recycling Process

Once the materials are separated, they are sold to various companies for reprocessing. Some materials are transformed into very different products, while others retain a similar use, for example:

  • Soft drink bottles become carpet, modern fleecy jumpers and new soft drink bottles
  • Milk bottles become garbage bins and pipes
  • Steel and aluminium cans become new cans
  • Glass becomes new jars and bottles
  • Milk cartons become high grade office paper
