Motorcycle Safety

Motorcyclist casualties in Rockdale are similar to NSW averages of those injured. There were four motorcyclist fatalities occurring in the Rockdale City Council area between 2000-2004. Although the numbers are low, motorcyclists represent 18 per cent of all those killed. Around 89 per cent of motorcyclists injured are male.

Motorcyclist casualties fell slightly in 2002 and 2003, but this trend reversed in 2004.

Breakfast Torque - Motorcycle Safety Event

Breakfast Torque is an annual motorcycle safety awareness event held at Loftus Oval located on the Princes Hwy, the main gateway to the south coast and near the entrance to the Royal National Park.

The Royal National Park is a popular destination for many weekend motorcyclists, and has the unfortunate distinction of being the location of 63 motorcycle crashes between 2000 and 2004.

55 per cent of crashes within the Royal National Park are a result of vehicles losing control on a bend, and 68 per cent of crashes are speed related.

Given the Kogarah City, Rockdale City and Sutherland Shire Council’s close geographical proximity to the Royal National Park, this event is an ideal opportunity to share resources to effectively promote motorcycle safety.

For more information on this year’s event, contact Council’s Road Safety Officer on 9562 1701 or email
