Central Safety Barrier Installation

In December 2011, Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) installed a 250m long low-height central concrete barrier along Rocky Point Road between Fontainebleau Street and the entry into St George Sailing Club, and a 130 metre long central wire rope barrier on Taren Point Road along the grassed median on the southern approach to the bridge, to improve road safety.

The second and final stage of work involves the installation of a 560m long safety barrier on the median of Captain Cook Bridge, in an effort to improve road safety and reduce the likelihood of head-on crashes. The RMS will install a steel barrier along the centre of the bridge deck which will adjoin to the existing barriers on both approaches to the bridge. This $1.1 million project is fully funded by the NSW Government.

The installation of the steel barrier on Captain Cook Bridge is expected to commence on Sunday 3 March 2013 and will take approximately ten weeks to complete, weather permitting.

To minimise traffic disruptions, the work will be undertaken at night. When working at night, the section of road adjoining the work area will be partially closed Sunday to Friday from 8pm to 5am. There will be some noise associated with this work, however every effort will be made to minimise the impact of noise on residents. During this work motorists are asked to follow the signs, including reduced speed limits, and to follow the direction of traffic controllers. Minor delays are expected due to lane closures.

RMS apologises for any inconvenience this important road safety work may cause and appreciates the patience of residents, business operators and motorists.
