Application Guidelines

While there is no right or wrong way to format your written application, you must address each of the selection criteria set out in the advertisement and/or information package.

To be considered for an interview, you must meet all of the essential selection criteria. Selection for interviews is based on your knowledge, skill level and ability to meet the selection criteria.

The information below includes a guide to preparing your application and a summary of Council's selection process. If you are not successful, remember that the job market is competitive and it is not a personal reflection on you.

Essential Information to Include in Your Application

Statements which clearly and concisely describe how you meet each of the selection criteria. Wherever possible, provide examples of your merit, do not simply state that you meet the criteria.

A succinct curriculum vitae or resume, containing contact information (full name, address and daytime contact number - we will be discreet in contacting you).

Your CV/resumè should include: a summary of your work experience including where you have worked, the position(s) held, the period of your employment, and brief details of your responsibilities and the duties you performed; and the names, position titles and telephone numbers of at least two professional referees who could provide comments on your ability to meet the selection criteria.

Also include any other relevant information.


Application Checklist

  • Clearly state the title of the position you are applying for on the application
  • Identify the application with your name and contact details
  • Address all of the selection criteria. Avoid being long-winded or padding out your statements with irrelevant information
  • Make sure your application is well presented (check it for typos and other mistakes)
  • Ensure your application is securely held together
  • Don't attach original documents, such as references and certificates, because we cannot be held responsible for their return
  • Lodge your application by the closing date, which appears at the bottom of each advertisement


The Selection Process

The selection panel comprises a minimum of three (3) members including the immediate supervisor of the position being recruited. There must be both males and females on the selection panel.

The panel will assess all written applications submitted and develop a list of successful candidates to interview. Unsuccessful candidates will be notified promptly.

All interviewees will be asked the same questions that have been designed with the selection criteria in mind. In some cases you may be asked to present samples of your past work or to complete a structured group of exercises or tests.

After the interviews, the panel decides on a short-list of candidates. The short-listed candidates will be sent for a pre-employment medical prior to being offered the position. This medical is at Council's expense.
